LG: Empty Frames
Feb. 13th, 2005 03:27 pmPlot bunnies are more effecent than alarm clocks. I woke up at 8 this morning even though I didn't have to and I went to bed after midnight. Which is odd since I'll sleep till ten on Sundays usually.
The long awaited begining to Al and Riza's story! The no touchie rule still applies as this is only half of the equation. And, I ask anyone who reads this here keeps this to themselves (don't tell people over at HoS) until I post it at the comm tommorow.
Empty Frames
The room looked exactly the same as it had when Fury visited yesterday. His eyes skidded away from the two comatose forms lying in the hospital beds. “Any word?”
Winry looked up at him. “No. The doctors are supposed to be back soon.” She gently smoothed Al’s hair. “Anything on the others?”
Fury shook his head. “They’re still missing. Major Armstrong found traces of a large alchemy explosion. But it isn’t his area of expertise. We really need another alchemist to come look at it but the problem is finding some one we trust.”
Winry nodded. “Maybe Al and Ed’s teacher would come. She’s in Dublith.”
“If she taught those two she’d certainly be able to help,” Fury nodded. “I’ll have some one contact her.”
“Izumi Curtis. That’s her name.” Winry’s voice shook. “She would want to know anyway. With Al…and ….Ed….” She sobbed. “They’ve been like this for two days. Why can’t the doctors do anything?!”
“Excuse me Miss.” The pair looked up to see a nurse standing in the doorway. “If you could come with me, Doctor Mathews would like to see you now.”
“May I come as well?” Fury asked.
The nurse looked slightly taken back. “Are you here on the military’s behalf?”
“No. I’m checking on my friends.”
Winry nodded. “Please. He’s been a friend for quite some time.”
“In that case, please come this way.”
“I’m not quite sure how to begin,” Doctor Mathews examined the pair before him.
“What’s wrong with them?” Winry demanded.
“If I knew I would tell you,” Mathews sighed. “Mr. Elric and Ms. Hawkeye have been examined by everyone we could call upon in Central. Physically they have a few minor abrasions, some bruising, a minor fracture in a rib bone and some second degree burns.”
“Then why won’t they wake up?” Winry cried.
“We don’t know.” Mathews admitted. “We’re calling in every specialist we can. They SHOULD have woken up.” He sighed. “If I was a religious person I’d say that they were missing their soul.”
“But they’ll get better right?” Winry insisted.
“I won’t lie to you Ms. Rockbell. We’ve had some cases similar to this before involving head trauma. Some of the patients never recovered. We can keep them alive for a period of time but if they don’t wake up their bodies will wither.” Fury found himself with an armful of Winry as the girl cried on his shoulder. “However, there may be some hope. Sometimes if the victims are brought into contact with someone or something that they have extremely strong emotional attachments to they will break out of the coma.”
“So maybe…”
“We might be able to save them both.” Mathews paused. “I suggest you increase your searches for Mr. Elric’s brother.”
“Why?” Fury asked suspiciously.
“Because he holds a strong connection to both of them. And,” the doctor added his eyes far away, “He has accomplished the impossible before.”
Any remarks are welcome. Also, we may get some back story from the minor character introduced here. Ask this question: why do you think he's doing everything he is for Al and Riza?
