This is a rought draft. I reserve the right to tweak it. But I wanted to post something to commemorate the event.
Clique and predictable. I don't care.
Summary: And the cycle continues.
Unwanted Gifts
Rowan smiled to himself as he drew the last line. His dad would be so surprised.
Rowan Elric had studied alchemy for years. He wasn’t as good as his dad or uncle, but he was still above average, at least in his opinion. His latest project had taken years to complete as he had to be both sneaky and careful.
Rowan had heard the story of how his father received his automail limbs. He had learned about the homunculi and Uncle Al’s time in the armor and later the loss of his memories. The Fullmetal Alchemist’s son knew quite a bit, and not all from his family. However, he had figured something out that his parent probably didn’t think he would consider. Uncle Al had lost his body as a child, but now was flesh again and married.
That meant, if you did it right, human transmutation was possible.
Rowan had cracked his father’s old notes three years ago. It had taken a lot of work, but now he knew exactly what he needed. The blond would give his father back what he had lost all of those years ago.
Rowan quickly exited the basement and headed for the living room. “Dad! Come here! I’ve got something to show you!”
Roy Mustang looked amused. Already into his early twenties, Rowan was still eager to impress his father. Ed looked up from his reading. “Rowan…”
“Please?” Rowan asked, using his pleading expression.
Ed closed the book with a sigh. “I’ll be there in a minute.”
“Great!” Rowan ran back down the stairs.
Roy merely smirked when Ed looked at him. The other alchemist stood, and followed his son’s footsteps down the basement stairs. “Rowan?” Ed felt his eyes slowly adjust to the dim lighting. He took a few steps forward, barely able to make out his son’s form on the other side of the room. “What’s going on?”
Edward felt more than saw his son’s grin. “This.” Two palms slammed down on the floor.
The elder Elric felt his stomach twist as he recognized the symbols etched into the glowing array. No!
Too late. The bright green light of his son’s transmutation turned a deep purple. Edward felt the power wrap around him and he collapsed to the ground with a painful thud. Metal was forcefully wrenched from his body. Rowan…
Finally, it stopped.
Edward forced himself up, stumbling on new limbs. He rushed to his son’s side. “Rowan!”
The blond gave a weak smile. “I did it, Dad.”
Edward felt his eyes fill with tears as his son’s form eroded in his arms. “No, no, no!”
“Riza, go get Al.” Roy instructed his wife from his place on the stairs.
“But – ”
“Hurry,” Roy insisted, descending the last of the stairs and moving over the chalk lines to Edward’s side. Riza hesitated only a moment more then rushed back up the stairs.
“Rowan, you IDIOT. I didn’t need this,” Ed clutched his son tightly.
Rowan smiled…
And vanished.
Roy Mustang gently embraced the man he had taken into his heart as his own son as Edward Elric wept for his only child. There was nothing else he could do.
"The sins of the father are passed to the son, generation after generation."

Date: 2005-04-12 07:42 pm (UTC)I've read some things like that, but I have my limits.
(but seriously, like ask any friend who's watched an anime where a main character gets beat up with me, I will actually visably/audibly wince...)

Much love for angst.
To all who are in cardiac arrest at the horrible PAIN: It's a nightmare. Ed's having an angsty nightmare, and he'll wake up and go glomp Rowan within an inch of his life. So there. All fixed.
