Yes, *gasp* she can write things not Hime-universe based at all. Of course...Hime also bunnied me, so maybe it’s not that much of an achievement. Hehehe..*sweatdrop*
Spoilers for the end of the series, movie info (?)
Edit: Dedicated to Schert who asked for genfic after answering the first Easter Riddle
Hime mentioned there are rumors that Roy gave up his certification voluntarily. This is what resulted.
Freedom
Roy Mustang, Corporal of the Amestris Army, looked up to the bright blue sky with a faint smile. By all rights, he should be upset. He was out in the front lines, without his certification, rank, familiar gloves, and without the support from his loyal subordinates.
Instead, he was very relaxed.
It was hard to believe it was really over. Hard to believe two years had already passed since the Flame Alchemist had battled with the Homunculus Pride, who had taken the name King Bradley and ruled Amestris. The battle had cost him greatly. He had lost his eye and received many other life threatening wounds. One thing that had helped in Roy’s opinion was the long recovery time. He had missed the yearly assessments for renewing his state alchemist certification. Of course, if he had tried he could have easily reapplied and regained it, but why should he?
It was a long standing tradition in Amestris that regular Alchemists could not be pressed into military service. The State Alchemist position had been created to get around that rule. Once the government had tried to conscript alchemists, and the people had risen up against the government shortly later. Alchemists were to serve the people, not the government. However, should an Alchemist voluntarily choose to abandon their duty for privileges, that was the problem of the individual and not the institution. It shifted blame from the government to the alchemist.
Without his certification, Roy Mustang couldn’t be forced to use his alchemy in war. Before, he had needed the rank it provided to move up the ranks and change the way the country ran.
He didn’t have to do that anymore. The government was back in the hands of the people. The military had lost power and undergone a tremendous change for the better.
“We did it, didn’t we Maes?” Roy murmured aloud. It hadn’t gone as planned of course, but that was to be expected. His one regret was for the Elric brothers. Alphonse had been restored but he had lost his memories and Edward was dead. Those two deserved much more.
The soldier snapped his fingers, feeling only flesh strike flesh. Roy Mustang, Flame Alchemist no longer, smiled.
He was free.
Okay, TECHNICALLY Roy isn’t free. He’s still caught in the military and presumably still in some trouble. But he doesn’t have to use his alchemy to kill. Which would make him very happy, most obviously because he didn’t want to repeat the incidents in Isabel. However, I think that to be a good alchemist you really have to enjoy the subject, even love it. And you wouldn’t want to use something you love to kill. And now I’ll shut up.
