Messenger (LG)

Al flopped back down on the bed with a sigh. Who knew it was so difficult to scry the past? “Are you alright Al?” Riza frowned staring down at her lover.

“Yeah, I’m just tired,” Al waved her worry away. “That’s not easy.”

Riza glared at the mirror they had been using as a focus. “I can’t get ANYTHING.”

“That’s not surprising,” Hughes consoled her. “Trisha and I couldn’t get anything except the past for several years after we died. People who are alchemists have practice manipulating power so it’s easier. And viewing the present requires a strong emotional connection which is why you can only see those three.”

“THAT is NOTHING like Alchemy,” Al groaned.

A knock at the door disrupted anymore conversation. “I’ll get it,” Trisha volunteered. She left the room and went down the stairs. The trio could faintly hear her speak to someone. “Alphonse, there’s someone here to see you.”

“Martel!” Hughes looked surprised. “What are you doing here?”

“I’ve got a message from Greed,” the former chimera replied. “The Homunculi can’t come out this far out so he sent me.”

“Greed?” Al frowned.

“That’s right, you wouldn’t remember,” Hughes glanced at the younger Elric. “Greed was a homunculus who worked against Dante and the other six sins. He had a group of chimera helping him. Martel is one of them. You actually knew her before.”

“Oh,” Al looked mildly uncomfortable but dismissed it. He had almost gotten used to missing a chunk of his memory. “You said you had a message?”

“Yes, apparently Greed had a run in with your older brother.”

Hohenheim frowned coming into the room from behind Martal. “You mean he is stranded here as well?”

“No, that’s what makes this so interesting. He’s been traveling back and forth apparently for years. He ended up almost to the very center of the Gate.”

A profound silence fell over the room. “…what does that mean?” Al asked. “Did Ed really come here?”

“He couldn’t have been here physically, we would have noticed. Everyone in the Gate would have noticed,” Hohenheim replied. “Which implies Edward can send his soul here on a whim.”

“Greed said he thought he was dreaming,” Martal added.

“Dreams are a time when one might be able to venture to the Gate…but it still doesn’t explain why he can return,” the eldest Elric pondered. “Thank you for your message.”

“No problem. Hope you two get home soon. And if there’re anymore run ins we’ll let you know.”

After Martal left Riza turned to Hohenheim. “If Ed can return to his body why can’t we?”

“I don’t know. It should be impossible.”

“So should contacting the others.”

Hohenheim had a sinking feeling he didn’t know as much about this as he thought.
