FMA: The Dark

So,
devils_devotion challenged me to write nonhappy Roy/Ed fic. Well, I tried. I think it came out more weird, strange and morbid than anything else. I kinda rushed it I think, I was trying to make “Torture Linn’s OTP week.” (Missed it by a half an hour!)
Title: The Dark [Title from Trans Siberian Orchestra song from Beethoven’s Last Night]
Summary: Ed got a surpise when he woke up.
Warnings (if any): SPOILERS for all of the series, Roy/Ed relationship, dark, morbidness, may give small children nightmares, not quite as much suckiness because it has been revised, possibly typos and grammar errors galore.
Edit: REVISEDx2!
The Dark
“Are you going to stay in bed all day?”
Edward blinked open his eyes. “Roy, what are you - ?” The name felt strange in his mouth. He tried again. “Colonel, what’s going on?”
“Some days Edward, I think you have no brains at all. You certainly don’t have to use my rank, but if you insist I’d prefer you use the right one. Major General.”
“Major General? But I thought – ” Roy leaned over and captured Ed’s lips. The older man released his lover after a minute. Ed frowned at the strange after taste from the kiss. “Coming to breakfast?”
Ed struggled out of bed, grabbed a near by robe and followed Roy to the kitchen. “What happened to all the lights?” The room was strangely dark; the room was lit only by a few sporadically placed candles. “And since when do you cook?” And why was he at Roy’s house? He never stayed; he wouldn’t abandon his brother, nor could their reputations handle the stain such an act might leave. He had always returned home quickly after their liaisons, returning to his cold narrow bed in the dorms, Al quietly waiting for him in the dark.
“You made this, remember?” Roy turned, holding something in his hand. He slipped it into Ed’s mouth. It was hard and sweet. Immediately took away the bitter taste in his mouth.
“Candy for breakfast?” Ed might not be picky when it came to food, but that was still a new one for him.
“Not exactly,” Roy picked up a dish on the table and held it up in the candle light. Small red chips glinted ominously. “Surely you remember making these?”
“Red stones,” Ed stumbled back, choking. “What do you mean, I made..?”
“Look outside,” Roy commanded, sounded utterly bored. Ed moved to the window, shaking. He slowly pulled back the curtain to see…
A desolate plane. Nothingness. No civilization to speak of. No life. “Impossible. I would never – ”
“Never is a very strong word, Fullmetal. After all, you thought about it in the fifth laboratory, didn’t you? You almost did to save your brother.”
“Don't bring Al into this you bastard!” Ed shouted, whirling. There was no life outside, and he hadn’t seen his brother inside the rooms so far, nor heard him. Surely not- surely he couldn’t have. Surely Al couldn’t have died. He must be somewhere, safe.
Ed could never have done that, could never have created that desolate, dead landscape. He couldn’t have used innocents to create the philosopher’s stone. And he most certainly wouldn’t have sacrificed his brother.
“You did to bring your mother back, don’t you remember? You threw him away on a hopeless dream and then selfishly imprisoned him. What more would death be?” Doubt whispered in his ear.
“NO! I refuse to believe it,” Ed thought, glaring at his lover. How dare this man say those things about his brother. Al who had forgiven Edward for all of his wrong doings, who had stood by his side through all of their travel and never once hated him despite the disaster Ed’s choices had made of their life. “What are you, heartless?”
Roy smiled. “How did you know?” He tossed off his robe and threw it to the side. The material landed on a candle and immediately caught flame. Edward didn’t notice. He was too busy staring at the hold in his lover’s chest. “You didn’t think a human could go up against a homunculus and win, did you?” Roy advanced slowly, his motions inhumanly fluid.
“Pride-”
“Carved out my heart, yes,” Roy finished. “I didn’t have your little tricks to cheat with.”
‘My fault,’ Ed thought, eyes frozen to Roy’s chest. ‘My fault. I let him go alone to face Pride. I should have gone with him. I beat a homunculus. He didn’t have the array. He didn’t know how…’
The candles flickered out.
“But you fix your mistakes, don’t you Edward?” Roy purred. He thrust a handful of chips into Ed’s hands. The raven haired man gently ate the stones from the blond’s hand, forcing Edward to feed him. It was a strangely disturbing sight, especially when lit by the quickly spreading fire, the only light in the dark kitchen. “Don’t you?” An eyebrow raised above violet eyes.
“Homunculus,” Edward hissed. He yanked his hand free and stepped back. Roy followed, perusing the alchemist to back to the bedroom. Ed stopped as his legs hit the bed.
“Surely you aren’t disappointed?” Roy leaned over. Edward brought his hands together. Roy caught them and held them fast with his right hand. “Isn’t this what you wanted?” He kissed Ed, hard and rough.
“No,” Ed gasped, attempting to push his assailant back.
Roy wasn’t impressed. He shoved the blond with his left hand. “You made this bed. Now sleep in it.” Edward fell back on to the bed. Only it wasn’t a bed, it was earth and it was falling in on him and…
A muffled scream barely escaped the new grave.
End
Optional epilogue that haves things make (a little) more sense.
Edward Elric
Fullmetal Alchemist
Devoted Brother
Alchemist of the People
The headstone, Roy reflected, hardly did his lover justice. He watched as the hole was slowly filled. The Flame alchemist silently berated himself once again. He had allowed Edward to leave and fight the leader of the homunculi alone. Pride had been a dangerous adversary; what type of enemy had the leader of the homunculi been? No mater the outcome of Fullmetal’s battle, the alchemist had been able to perform the necessary human transmutation to save his brother. Edward had pulled off the impossible again.
Those gathered moved forward to place a few flowers at the base of the new headstone as the grave was finally filled. It was amazing to see how many people had come to Ed’s funeral. He truly was the People’s Alchemist. There was one noticeable exception; Alphonse had refused to attend the funeral, adamantly stating that his brother wasn’t dead, and that he would bring him home. Roy paused for a moment and then left. There was no point in morning over an empty grave. Like Al, Roy wouldn’t believe reports of his lover’s death until he saw the body.
A chance was all he needed. For hope.
* * * *
Edward awoke with a scream, jerking up in bed. His breath came in pants as he attempted to calm himself.
“Edward?”
Ed’s head snapped around to stare at the figure in his doorway. Of course. He remembered now. The Gate, Al’s sacrifice, reawakening in this world. “What do you want?”
“Edward, you were having a nightmare-”
“Yeah and what do you care.” Ed turned over away from his father. ‘You lost the right to take care of me a long time ago old man,’ he silently snarled. His mind flickered back to Roy and his thoughts in the nightmare. It was possible he had died fighting Pride. ‘You better be alive, bastard. Because if you aren’t, I’m going to kick your ass.’
End for real!
Attempt at non-happy Roy/Ed. *fails, obviously* Ah, the major general thing. Two ranks promotion on death. ^^ So Colonel + 2 = Major General I believe (Correct me if I’m wrong), which is what Ed’s thought process would have given Roy if Roy had died. Sorta, maybe kinda? It sounds good.
