Promises
Edward flopped down on the train seat, completely exhausted. It had been a long mission. Chimeras, assassins, rogue alchemists… He was glad to be going home. Riza took her seat across from him. Outside the door to the compartment two officers took up defensive positions. It felt odd staying in a private car instead of in the regular seating, but in a nice way. It would be easier to relax without having to watch for threats constantly.
“Are you alright, Ed?”
“Hm? Yeah. No problem.”
“That attack got pretty close,” Hawkeye studied the elder Elric brother.
Edward flushed. “Won’t happen again. And I’m fine. You got the guy before he would get another attack in.” His eyes flickered over her. “Are you alright? Those claws got awful close.”
“Yes,” Riza replied. “You managed to destroy the chimera before anything happened.”
“Good,” Ed mumbled. “Roy would kill me.”
Riza suddenly stood and sat beside Ed. She held him tightly. A moment later she pulled him into a tight hug. Golden eyes widened in shock as the other held him close. “Don’t EVER do that again.”
“Riza, it was fine.” Ed tried to console his lover. She rarely became so emotional in public. “Everything turned out alright.”
“It nearly didn’t,” Riza replied furiously. “You take too many risks Ed.” What the alchemist didn’t know was originally a newer sniper was supposed to accompany Ed in order to gain some practical experience.
Roy’s spies had detected how volatile the situation had become only just before Edward had to leave. Riza had volunteered to take the mission. She worried now what would have happened if she hadn’t. “Promise me you’ll be more careful.”
“I will.” Ed replied, laying his head on her shoulder.
Riza smiled and gently brushed a loose strand of hair away from his eyes. “We can’t lose you.” A soft snore was all she received in reply. The blonde carefully shifted Edward so she could easily reach her gun. Nothing would happen to him on her watch.
