A Tale of Two Lovers
They had been childhood sweethearts.
Their love of learning and books had brought them together at a young age. Many had smiled at the sight of the two heads buried together over a thick volume in the sunshine. She was older than he was by a few years, though you couldn’t tell by looking at them. As the years had passed, their relationship had turned from platonic friendship to the sweetness of a first love. Many had smiled knowingly, claiming that there would soon be a wedding.
There was, but not the one everyone had suspected.
It was a warm day. She had been waiting for him. He had said he had something important to tell her.
“I’m going to Central.”
“What?!”
“I’m going to become a State Alchemist.”
And five days later, right after his eighteenth birthday, he did.
She couldn’t believe it. Couldn’t believe that he would volunteer to use his knowledge in a war situation. She grew angry, and turned her eyes to other men. Soon, she found one who had loved her silently for years, but hadn’t spoken. They were married within the year. She was pregnant soon after. In the years that passed, she learned to truly love her husband with all of her heart and place her first love behind her.
He was sent off to the east. There, in the wasteland, he learned the truth of the military through great personal pain. He began to expand his contacts, seeking out any information he could get. It was then that he discovered her marriage. He vowed then and there that no woman would even hold his heart again.
They had met one time after their separation. He had been surprised to see her, in a military establishment of all things. It was her words that surprised him most of all. He didn’t know those three had even met each other. His surprise had turned to anger as she abruptly left, husband following faithfully behind.
In the days that followed he had little time to dwell on it. Things were so busy he barely could keep his thoughts straight, much less his emotions. And after things were over, so much had changed. He didn’t even know where to start. Eventually he had gone on with his life, determined to leave the past behind him this time.
It was she who approached him without her husband by her side. They sat quietly for a long time, just observing each other. She was glad to see his current rank. He was confused as to why she was here.
She asked her question quietly. He shook his head. “No, still no word.”
She nodded. In truth she hadn’t really expected anything but her heart wouldn’t allow her to abandon all hope that her ‘son’ had survived. The irony never ceased to amaze her. She couldn’t bear children for her husband, yet served as mother to two whom her first love viewed almost as his sons.
“I should go.”
“Wait. How is Alphonse?”
“He’s fine. He should be leaving within the month. He’s determined to find his brother.”
“Thank you….Izumi.”
“You’re welcome…Roy.”
There are probably some cannon time issues with ages and the like but...hey, I tried. Not an easy pairing to do. Thanks
acdragonmaster for the idea! It was a great challenge.
