So, I survived my first year as a teacher (HUZZAH!) and am intending to go back next year. In some ways I'm looking forward to it even (one of my VPs told me I needed to get a life when I admitted this.)
Thus far this summer we have made our annual trip to Knobles, an awesome amusement part I wish everyone got a chance to try - it's very old fashioned, but in the fantastic way. (For example? You pay to go ON rides, not get in the park!) We've also been working like MAD on our Ah! My Goddess costumes for Otakon. Bell's under dress is done, and her blue over dress is cut out, but we have to hem and put them together before we start trim and such. Skuld and Urd are basically all in parts, but we have a good sense of where we are going with it. (Bell got to this stage in about a week or so; this makes me much less worried than I was when we were still dragging our feet to start....) My sister is coming with us to Con after she gets back from Italy with Mom. They leave the 15th, which isn't so awesome in the sense that 1/2 (or so) of our creating team will be gone. Dad and I will probably focus on jewelry, trim and my hammer while they're gone.
It'll be amusing 'getting into character'. CBL (my sister) is not passive like Bell is AT ALL. I wouldn't say Kiraya is a match for Urd either (She's got the height for it but not the temper.) Me? I get to squee about ice cream, my sister, equations and making this.
....yeah, really hard to get into character. >D

Date: 2008-07-03 03:58 am (UTC)It's good that you're enjoying your time as a teacher, though; don't lose that spark, mm? I'm sure both of us remember teachers who just didn't care anymore, and I'd hate to see you become one of them.

Date: 2008-07-04 02:21 am (UTC)Hi!
Date: 2008-07-03 11:15 am (UTC)Sounds like you're going to have an awesome time at Otakon; it's fun to go in a group together (I once went to a convention on my own and cosplayed Genjo Sanzo, only to run into a similarly-solo Goku, and later a Hakkai and Gojyo pair. Talk about an instant friendship group!)Sounds like you're putting a *lot* of effort into the costumes - I'm sure they'll look superb.
Nik.
Re: Hi!
Date: 2008-07-03 02:57 pm (UTC)I've been cosplaying for...good grief, this will be my 8th year. First year I was Ranma by myself, second I was Ritsuko from Eva with a four group of Eva girls (we had something like happened to you though - we picked up a Kaji and assorted other Eva people getting up to like 13 total at points), We did a Ranma group (Ranma again), and a FLCL group (Canti, and my outfit is awesome. I've reused it a lot), and a Read or Die group (Yomiko). This is the first time we're doing costumes from complete scratch though, so I'm really excited. ^.^
Re: Hi!
Date: 2008-07-04 12:05 pm (UTC)Sounds like you've been having an awesome time with the cosplaying. EVA cosplaying does tend to be pretty popular at conventions, I've noticed. Which can make ordering a coffee at the kiosk somewhat problematical. ('So, which Rei was the latte and which Rei was the skinny cap? The long black?') To be fair, I haven't been to a con in some time, but I rather doubt that particular aspect will have changed appreciably. :)
I've actually cosplayed Haruhara Haruko myself. The best bit about the costume was the soft-foam guitar I made. Took longer than sewing the tunic or making the scarf, but it was very therapeutic to be able to periodically clobber people over the head when they were being particularly rambunctious and still claim it was all in-character! I'd love to see any photos you've got of your Canti outfit.
Oddly enough, the first thing I thought when i saw Yomiko for the very first time at a screening of the ROD OAV at anime club (we only had the first episode fansubbed. It was a *long* wait to get the other two, I tell you!) was 'what the-? I could go to my wardrobe *right now* and cosplay this character! I wouldn't need to buy a single thing!' So, of course, when the opportunity came up I promptly did just that.
I look forward to hearing hte updates of how your costume construction is progressing!
