Chapter 1
It all starts with a simple question. Sora has been staring mindlessly into space instead of paying attention to the teacher. His parents have insisted he return to school, as have Riku’s, but it isn’t working too well. Somehow reading, writing and arithmetic did not even begin to replace fighting Heartless and saving worlds. In his wandering thoughts concerning his past adventures, Sora has an abrupt thought: had Roxas gone to school?
Blinking, the Keyblade master suddenly realizes how little he knows about his Nobody. For that matter, he had been the last to recognize he even had a Nobody. What had Roxas been like? Why doesn’t Sora know him? Roxas is a part of himself, so shouldn’t he know everything Roxas did? ::Roxas?:: The tentative mental probe goes unanswered.
“Sora, if you would please pay attention….”
Flushing, the teen directs his errant attention back towards the board as the teacher continues his lesson.
But his curiosity doesn’t stop there. Over the next few days he finds himself thinking about Roxas repeatedly. Had the Nobody had friends? What about Axel? Nobodies supposedly didn’t have feelings, but they had seemed close, or at least Axel had cared for Roxas. Sora considers asking Kairi about Naminé but decides against it. Kairi never mentions her Nobody and he finds himself reluctant to start that conversation.
The Keyblade master can’t understand why he is so obsessed with Roxas. Inner contemplation has never been his thing; that is far more Riku’s area of expertise. The few times he ventured into that area Donald or Goofy usually dragged him out of it, one way or another.
Eventually it becomes too much for Sora to bear. His heart needs to know Roxas with a ferocity that surprises him, and because it is what he does, he follows his heart. One day when he gets the chance he slips off the planet and makes his way to Twilight Town, or rather the tower a short distance from it. Sora knocks once on the door, which quietly opens on its own. The stairs are still as long and convoluted as he remembers, and Yen Sid looks as stern as he had upon their first meeting.
Sora is at a lost for words for a moment as the wizard’s eyes peered into him. Finally, Yen Sid speaks. “Your heart is in turmoil.”
The brunet nods. “I don’t know Roxas. He was my Nobody but we merged and I still don’t know him but he’s a part of me and I was hoping you could help me – ” He’s rambling, he realizes, and forces himself to stop.
Yen Sid pauses for a time, weighting the figure before him again then moves to a bookshelf, selecting a thick tome. “This book describes a method to discover the secrets about one’s self. It may help you.” He hands it to Sora. “Be careful, Sora. If you start on this path you won’t be able to stop until you finish, and there are parts of everyone they may be better off not knowing.”
The Keyblade master nods again, but already knows his path. Besides, he’s never exactly been one to weigh consequences of his actions in depth. If he had, Roxas might never have come into being in the first place – which probably means Sora should think about this more.
He does, spending well over a week weighting the problem’s benefits and consequences in his mind. His friends are worried by his silence, but he smiles away his concern.
It isn’t like he hasn’t already made the decision.
The book is pretty thick. It takes Sora almost a month to read through, because of its archaic language and complex terms. In the end it boils down mostly to meditation before sleep, trying to force your unconsciousness to reveal its secrets. There are no magic words, no gestures like in the spells Donald and Merlin had taught him and Sora can’t help but wonder if this is really magic.
The youth practices the meditation for three months, and is finally able to recall his dreams clearly when he decides to go through with it. That night Sora quickly readies for bed, trying to contain his excitement. The book warned that expecting anything could quickly lead to unpleasant ends, but he cannot help but hope. He lies down in bed and focuses on his breathing, counting slowly to seven while fixing a picture of Roxas from their fight in his mind. Show me -

Cold, dark, wet –
Let me go!
Reaching, pulling, going against the current – I won’t, I won’t! I have to - Air. I gasp, my lungs aching and feeling as if I had just run a great distance while my body shakes.
“Interesting.” Not a voice I know, but one cold, distant and controlled. “What is your name?”
Name? A…name? What was a name? Did I have one? “I don’t – I don’t know,” I choke out. I don’t understand.
A cold gloved hand grasps my chin and turn my face up from the hard, rain washed cement. “Indeed. You are a different case, as suspected.” The hand drops my chin, letting it smash painfully on the pavement. “Your name is Roxas. You are Number Thirteen. Welcome to the Organization.”

Author babble:
maiki mentioned in her Partial novel translation that Roxas never remembered his past as an organization member. I’ve posted about this before, though I actually wrote this first. Both of these stories are exploring the idea of there being, amongst other things, “two” Roxases (Roxi?): Twilight Town Roxas and Organization Roxas. This is a story of self discovery. I’m hoping it will come out pretty well. ^_^
Oh, and I have all of the darkness themes drafted; I’m just editing them and tweaking events as I get a better handle on the characters.
