Summary: And the problem is revealed...

Chapter 3: Akando

When Edward arrived at the station he realized he was two hours early. That in and of itself was surprising. The new train designs must have been better than he expected. Pulling his cloak tighter about his shoulders, he pondered where he should go. To return to the house now would require an even longer period of unpleasantness as Ed tried to explain what he knew while the others tried to convince him he was wrong. Besides, showing up early always threw everyone out of balance and made things even worse.

His feet led him to a familiar shop on the corner. He hesitated a moment before knocking. His automail didn’t really need tuning; he’d been taking much better care of it lately. But he hadn’t stopped in to see Winry and Scieszka in almost a year and a half. He was probably due.

Winry opened the door and saw a surprising sight. There stood Edward Elric, thinner than he had been the last time she had seen him. He looked lost in the large black cloak that he had begun wearing three years ago, right after Seiko’s birth. He refused to take the thing off, no matter the circumstances. “Ed! Come in!”

Gold eyes blinked at her in surprise. He followed her inside. “Winry…?”

“How’s your automail? It’s okay isn’t it? I can’t tell with that cloak on…”

“No, there’s no problem,” Ed replied sounding confused.

Winry flushed. She hurried into the kitchen to get a drink. She returned and gave Ed the glass. The alchemist watched the blonde twitch. “Um… Scieszka found a book in the library. It was called ‘The Twin Identity.’” Ed stared at her. Could that mean…? “Seiko is showing all of the signs it mentioned. You were right. I’m sorry I treated you the way I did.”

“It’s alright Winry,” Ed lightly placed his flesh hand on her shoulder. “You didn’t know and I couldn’t tell you.”

“We tried to show the others the book,” Winry sighed. “Al brushed it off as impossible. Do you need to see it?”

Ed shock his head. “I’ve already read it. I sent it to the library in the first place.”

“Seiko’s gotten really big lately,” Winry added. “I think he’s going through a growth spurt.”

“What?” Ed yelled. “When did it start?”

“Um, about three months ago.”

“And you showed them the book when?”

“About…three months ago.”

Ed whirled. “I have to go.”

“What? Why? You’re still almost an hour early.”

“He’s making his move.”

*******************************************

Riza carefully picked Seiko up and left the dining room. Behind her she could hear the sound of the three men cleaning the table. She held her child close all too aware Edward would be arriving in a half an hour.

His beliefs had to be a result of Envy’s manipulations, Riza thought not for the first time. Even after five years Edward still bore marks from that battle. She gently smoothed the blond hair. “Mama?”

“Yes Seiko?”

“He’s coming soon, isn’t he.”

“Yes, Edward should be here in half an hour.”

“Well then, I guess it’s time then.”

Riza fell to the ground as a terrifying pain ripped through her.

*******************************************

The sound of Riza screaming summoned Masuta, Roy, and Al from the kitchen. The sight would have been comical if not for the seriousness of the situation. Masuta had an apron on with a dishrag in one hand. Al had a drying towel. Roy was the only one unburdened. Unfortunately he didn’t have his gloves either. Al dropped the rag and quickly knelt by Riza’s side. “What happened?” Her skin was terribly cold. Al had a sudden memory of the day his mother died. “Riza!”

“She was in the way,” Seiko smirked. Three sets of eyes widened as the child suddenly began to change into a very familiar form.

The front door slammed open. Edward stood there, chest rapidly rising while he tried to catch his breath. His face displayed no shock. Only weariness from carrying a secret alone for too long and a resignation from seeing a fear long hoped against come to pass.

“Hello Envy.”
