I’ve mentioned it before, and [personal profile] kiraya and I have discussed it but I thought it’d be worth mentioning here. Writing BE – and the huge amount of planning and care that goes into it – with the addition of giving up fic for so long has made me very, very, picky about characterizations. I can see characters changing; they’re dynamic, after all. But far too often I’ve seen fics just throw them into something and not justifying it at all. I’m probably guilty of this too at times but dang if I haven’t gotten selective in what I read in FFVII fandom, and not just shipper wise.

A good example of this would be A Long Hard Road. I got into an argument with someone on the characterization of Cloud. For me, it seemed like a believable characterization (and in some ways in line with AC, so there. :P) because it had been five years of war. When circumstances are weighed, it makes perfect sense how broken he is.

Some other things I’ve been seeing lately….do not make so much sense. Some are close so it passes but others? ICK. Especially the ones NOT labeled AU. AU at least gives you some sliding room.

I also acknowledge some of these writers are probably either new to the fandom or writing at all but ….still. Ah well. I’m used to not reading as much fic as I used to.

Well, I’m off to go clean the bathroom and then maybe work on BE17.

P.S. PLEASE people, for the love of whoever you want, if your story isn’t AU don’t have Cloud meet Aeris before game time. Or more accurately, have Aeris meet Cloud. It’s given he would probably forget her. But there is no reason for her to forget him, unless you invent one and explain it. :/ And she shows no signs of knowing him.

Edit: And I swear to God, Square, if you have Cloud and Aeris meet in CC without explaining that issue I will be very angry with you, even if you DO fail at logistics.

there really weren't power lines? I thought there were, in the game anyway. Aha, an excuse to watch it again! ^_^

hmmm...Cloud meeting Aeris before Midgar and then not remembering her...that could be an interesting AU, I think. I would write it, and I don't even write fic. The plotbunnies have gotten good at stealth lately. I probably only think so because I haven't read it before. What am I saying? Stupid plotbunnies. *gets the flamethrower* Flamethrower selection for fire resistant microbio plotbunnies!

...sorry!

Not on all of 'em. Some were placed in really random spots too.

I don't mind it being AU....but people trying to pretend it works in canon really ticks me off.

*cheers for random canon placement (or non-placement) of powerlines*

OH! I didn't get that, even though you clearly spelled it out (oops!). Now I see what you meant. It bothers me too, so I just approach all fanfiction with the assumption that it's AU. No worries.
