*waves hand in Jedi-like motion* You do not see these words. Linn is still ignoring this Bound AU bunny…
Rufus Shinra didn’t particularly like Cloud Strife.
Perhaps if they had met when the man had been a teen, before that fateful mission to Nibelheim they could have been friends. However, after a decade in the hands of the Shinra Science department and over half another clawing his way up the SOLDIER ranks, this Cloud Strife barely resembled that youth from so long ago. It still pained Rufus to know that he was willingly cooperating with his father’s murder, but he seen both the reasons for Cloud’s actions and the cost the blond had suffered for them. Besides, they needed Cloud, now more than ever. The man was quite possibly the only living creature that could handle some of the monsters Hojo had left behind.
The President of Shinra cursed the man. Even twelve years after his death his presence still left a visible taint in the world. A second later he sent off a brief prayer that Strife didn’t loose what little humanity he had left. There was no one who could take him down if that happened.
The soft sound of the door opening distracted president and general from the schematics in front of them. Rufus looked up to see a familiar figure slip through the door. “Falna, you should be in bed.”
“I lost Uncle Tseng,” the seven year old girl replied. She went straight over to Rufus and sat on his lap. “Who is this, Papa?”
Translate ‘lost’ as ‘ran away from in a great hurry’ and the statement would probably be more truthful. Falna had a large mischievous streak in her. Luckily it was countered by her compassion. Tseng probably knew where his charge was but wouldn’t interfere as long as Strife was in the same room. The pair had never gotten along, though Rufus had never discovered why despite his efforts. “This is General Cloud Strife,” Rufus introduced the pair. “I don’t think you’ve met my daughter yet.”
“No.” The reply was curt, but not harsh. Strife’s glowing blue eyes were peering off at some distant point, like always. When those eyes became focused on the present it was a very good idea to keep very still, as it generally was a sign that something, somewhere, was about to die.
“Nice to meet you Uncle Cloud!” Falna cheerfully chirped.
That got a reaction from both men in the room. “He isn’t your Uncle, Falna.”
“But he’s got blond hair too!” The girl turned her vibrant eyes which she had inherited from her mother up to her father’s face. The glow in them however, came from himself. “And he’s got glowing eyes like you!” Without wasting another moment the girl scrambled off of Rufus’ lap and hugged Cloud. “We’re going to be friends, right?”
The General slowly lifted a hand and placed it on the girl’s head, as if remembering something he had once known from long ago but had forgotten. Falna beamed at Cloud, who slowly nodded. The pair stayed like that for a moment or two until the door opened.
“Miss Falna.” Elena carefully closed the door behind her. “I’m sorry we allowed her to escape, sir.”
“No harm done,” Rufus replied, waving off the apology though he was silently amused that Tseng had apparently called in reinforcements. “Falna, time for bed.”
“Yes, Papa.” Falna replied. She ran over and gave her dad a kiss on the cheek. “I love you!”
“I love you too. Now, go to sleep.” It wasn’t until after his daughter had safely left the room that Rufus looked back over at Strife. He was startled to see just a bit more humanity shining through the shell that science had left. As the man considered what else Falna might have inherited from her mother, her visit might not have been unplanned after all.
Haven't reread this at all. so there are probably errors. Please ignore them. Posted mostly for my own records, but some people might enjoy reading it. *shrugs*
