A while ago I promised
devils_devotion and
jade_pen a fic for their online marriage. I finally got it done. Sorry for the wait you guys!
Title: By Your Side
Pairings: Roy/Al. Strong Ed and Al relationship. (Or one sided Elricest if you want to think of it that way.)
Rating: PG-13ish
Warnings: Yaoi. Angst.
Edward Elric stood, watched his brother and seethed.
Honestly, wasn’t it ever enough?
He had finally found a way back to his world from that blasted place the Gate had flung him six years ago, only to find this.
Seeing his brother grown up had been quite a shock. Ed hadn’t known how his attempt at restoring his brother had resulted. He had always assumed – hoped, dreamed, prayed – that he had been successful, but to actually see it was something else entirely. So when he had been embraced by a tall young man, dressed in his old clothing style, he had nearly fallen over. This was his brother? This tall, joyful, brilliant young alchemist?
Later he had heard the story. Al had been found missing all of his memories of the time he had been in the armor. He had trained with their master and then returned to Central, meeting Roy Mustang for the first time, to the best of his knowledge. A deal had been struck, an old red coat retrieved from storage and the Fullmetal Alchemist once again was a member of the military.
It had left a bitter taste in Ed’s mouth the first time he heard it. He hadn’t placed his life - his entire existence – on the line for Al to become a dog of the state. He most certainly hadn’t been happy to hear that Al had lost so many of the memories that had bound them together. The time they had sent searching for the Philosopher Stone, while painful to recall, held so many important memories for Ed. The brothers had become closer through the trials they had endured.
Edward couldn’t imagine his life without Al.
Even in the other world, he had barely lived without Al. While not physically there, Al’s voice echoed in his brother’s thoughts. Ed could practically hear his brother’s gentle objections, his suggestions and his brilliant insights. So often Ed had transferred that to Alfons, treating the man as a copy of his brother instead of who he was…and yet Ed found he couldn’t stop. He knew it was wrong, he knew he shouldn’t, but not having Al by his side was something his mind couldn’t accept.
So it invented one for him, and right and wrong be damned.
When the elder brother had returned to the younger brother’s side, they had been all but inseparable. Everything was right in Ed’s universe again. He had his alchemy back, he was home and most of all Al was with him again.
And then he had found out.
He had been angry. He had shouted and screamed. Al had stomped out and Ed found himself alone in an empty apartment, his world turned upside down. Things hadn’t been the same since. Al had been hurt by his brother’s words; Ed hurt by Al’s lack of understanding.
Ed had moped for several days until now, when he had caught sight of the pair outside the window. Watching them was painful. Not because the man wasn’t good to his brother; no, he obviously adored the blond. It hurt because Ed knew there was no way he could take his place by his brother’s side anymore. Someone had that place and there would be no way to separate them.
He had wanted to deny it. So he had watched the pair carefully, searching for some sign that things were not as they appeared. He found none. His brother’s chosen partner lavished his lover in every way. He appeared with Al in public and made no secret of their relationship. Obviously, he had managed to find a way to work things out with his superiors…
Or maybe it was because the man didn’t need to advance his rank anymore. His own goals were complete; he had all the time in the world, now.
Ed scowled. He really had no choice. He would have to apologize, to both of them. With this in mind, he slowly made his way from the apartment that had once belonged to both Elrics and now only belonged to one, down the street to a small house. He hesitated a moment, and then knocked on the door using the new automail that Winry had installed upon his return.
“I’ll get it!” The muffled sound of feet on wood floors were audible from Ed’s position as Al approached the door. “Brother.”
“I-”
“Al?” The younger Elric’s dark haired lover came up behind him. Ed clenched his fists. Roy Mustang had never been one of his favorite people and now he had to deal with him as his brother’s lifemate….
“I’m sorry, Al,” Ed managed to say. “You’re right. I have no right to control your life like that.”
A smile burst onto Al’s face. “Brother.” The word was forgiveness, in and of itself. Ed felt another guilty twinge; his brother cared far too much for his own good. Al embraced his sibling tightly. “Come inside?”
Ed pulled away and shook his head. Going inside would make it too real. Not that it wasn’t real, but he wasn’t ready for that yet. “I’ve got some stuff I need to do. Research.” He didn’t, of course. All of his projects had been completed. The results stood before him.
“Alright.” Al sounded a little disappointed but knew better than to push. “Why don’t we meet at the café for lunch tomorrow? You might be able to help me out with my assignment.”
“Anything for you, Al.” And that was what it came down to really. Edward Elric would do anything for his brother. Brave homunculi, fight The Gate for his soul, search for a way back from a foreign world. Even try to get along with one Roy Mustang. Anything. Everything. For Al.
