Part of a series of fics set before "Eyes"
Marked by death (LG)
One of the problems about being suddenly tossed into another dimension, Ed reflected, was you had no time to pack. You would think they’d give you ten days notice but no, couldn’t do that could they. After several weeks in the alternate world they really did have to go shopping. Their own clothes were in terrible shape and the spares Thomas and Elizabeth had graciously supplied didn’t really fit correctly. Not that Ed was complaining to have clothes at all; he just would like some that were comfortable.
So Ed had headed out with the Roys to get clothing.
Luckily they had money to use, and not the Hugheses’ either. Hohenheim had left a will stipulating that in the event of his death his money was to go to Edward. Edward had wandered so much no one realized he had left. The money had remained in the bank as he had signed the proper papers before he and Masuta had returned to his world. So financially they were fine.
A benefit of living with the gentry, Ed thought with a smile, was the ability to have your purchases delivered. The three men had bought quite a bit but didn’t have to burden themselves.
“Childling…”
Ed froze at the voice. “Did you hear something?”
“Childing…” The trio turned. There, hidden in the shadows of the nearby building sat an old woman. “Child of gold and light, you bear death’s mark upon you.”
Ed froze, feeling his breath catch in his chest. For the first time in years he remembered that terrible feeling as life ebbed from his body while blood flowed from the wound in his chest. “Ed?” Masuta gently touched the blond’s shoulder.
“And you. That body is far younger than it appears though your soul is older, is it not wanderer?” The woman turned her eyes to the man besides Ed. She shifted her gaze again, landing on Roy this time. “You bear many burdens upon your soul, not all of your own making. The wind seems to favor you.”
“Let’s go,” Roy gave Masuta a look. The General had heard more than enough. The Japanese man tugged on Ed’s arm. The blond snapped out of his trance and followed the pair out.
“Be careful not to stray to far bright child. You have a longer line, but stretch too far and it will sever.”
Ed whirled. “What?” Roy asked.
He could no longer see the woman. Ed felt a shiver go down his spine. She had vanished completely. “It’s nothing. Let’s go back.”
