Continuation from [profile] forgottenlover's drabble here which resurrected a bunny I killed a while ago. Written on a very tired mind, so please be gentle. I might tweek this some more tommorow.

Length: 3 & 1/2 pages, 1421 words.

Kieran and Helios

Duo Maxwell moved through the long walls of the military compound, keeping his eyes open for a familiar ‘perfect soldier.’ It hadn’t taken much work for the pilot of the Deathsythe to discover the rumors flying around this place called “East City.” Colonel Roy Mustang had brought someone in, someone who fit Heero’s description perfectly.

And they were saying the Colonel was his father.

Duo had almost laughed aloud at that, but had stopped in time to keep his cover. Luck was still on his side it seemed. It was luck that had brought him here after all. Or maybe not.

Duo didn’t push up the blue sleeve to stare at his right arm. He knew the scar was still there. A complicated circle, crossed by many lines. The chestnut haired pilot couldn’t remember exactly how he had gotten it, though he remembered the young man who had arrived with it.

It was back before he actually was Duo, back in the days on L2. He’d been making his rounds, hoping to find something of value to share with his ‘family’ when a small youth had tumbled out of a door. Solo and several of the older kids in the children’s gang had found the pair. Both had strange burns on their arms, Duo on his right, the kid on his left.

The others had taken both of them back to their hideout. The blond had awakened a bit later, only a few minutes before Duo himself.

After a rather complicated mess, the gang had officially adopted the blond, giving him the name ‘Helios’ for his bright coloring and his fiery temper. Helios rarely stayed around for more than a few hours; it was clear he was from the upper class. However, he returned often baring gifts of food that were appreciated by all.

The blond hadn’t lasted long, sad to say. A little under five months after his arrival Helios caught the L2 plague and vanished for good. Duo hated to admit it, but after everyone else began coming down with the disease, he had pretty much forgot the kid. Kid. Well, technically, Helios was the same age as he was, but the blond was a LOT more innocent. Reminded him of Quatre actually.

Duo wondered how the fourth gundam pilot was doing. The pair had been together when Heero had vanished, after self-detonating his gundam, but had been caught by OZ soldiers. The pilots had been well on their way to freedom when a dying soldier managed to drag Duo down to the ground. The braided pilot had felt a searing pain in his right arm, blacked out, and found himself outside of this military complex.

A mischievous grin flashed across his face as he recognized a familiar figure. “Heya Heero!” The American grinned throwing his arm around the Wing gundam pilot’s shoulders.

“You look ridiculous,” Heero shoved the arm off of him.

“Yay, well, our buddies certainly have these guys beat for style,” Duo agreed, smoothing the Amestris military uniform he had ‘borrowed.’ OZ one’s were much nicer, in his humble opinion. “So, who were you…”

“Helios?!?”

Edward Elric was annoyed. Not only was he in East City instead of looking for more clues for the Philosopher’s Stone, he wasn’t even in the library. No, he was stuck in the hallway outside Mustang’s office waiting for his superior to show up. “What the hell was the Colonel doing anyway?” Ed grumbled, slouching against the wall. Really, for the Flame Alchemist to have a kid his age the military officer must’ve been busy earning his reputation early in his life.

Just then, the people in question stepped out of the office. “Ah, Fullmetal. I’d like you to meet Heero.” Colonel Mustang smirked.

No explanation of the relationship of course. Ed had to find that out from outside sources. Ed gave a curt nod. Heero didn’t respond, only studied the youth in front of him. Ed had the sinking feeling he was being compared to someone and wasn’t coming up favorably.

“Colonel,” Riza Hawkeye opened the door, “you have a top priority call from Central.”

Mustang nodded and left the two teens in the hallway. Very shortly, they were joined by another.

“Heya Heero!”

“You look ridiculous.”

“Yay, well, our buddies certainly have these guys beat for style. So, who were you…”

“Helios?!?”

Edward couldn’t believe his eyes. “Kieran?!?”

Heero’s dark blue eyes flickered between the two braided figures. “Explain.”

“Damn, Helios. I knew you said you came from another world but I didn’t think you meant this. What the hell happened?” Duo ran a hand through his bangs. They had always thought “another world” meant the world of the rich, which on L2 practically was another world. Certainly not another dimension!

Edward stared at the young man before him. He certainly looked a lot different from the kid who had fought for survival on the streets, but the number of people who had ever called him ‘Helios’ and looked even a BIT like Kieran…

“A lot,” Ed’s gold eyes flickered to the office nearby. “We probably shouldn’t discuss this here.”

Duo nodded, sad to see such wariness in his friend’s once innocent eyes. “Lead the way.”

As the three walked quickly down the hall, Edward allowed himself to look back, and remember….

~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~~^*^~

He had found the pair of arrays by accident. They had fallen out of one of his father’s books. Al had been feeling a little sick, so he had to play by himself. He hadn’t recognized the arrays at all. They would be interesting to experiment with.

So Ed had left the house and ran out into the sunshine. A short distance from the house, he placed the papers on the ground and carefully activated the edges. The next thing he knew, he had the impression of falling, of great dark things reaching for him, and fire racing up his arm. He had awaken later to find himself in the possession of Solo’s gang, in a world he had never even guessed existed. Or perhaps world wasn’t the correct term, as he later discovered he was actually on a colony, not a planet. The entire concept made his head spin.

It had taken a bit to get the array now burned into his flesh to work. Once he did, however, Ed snuck away from home as often as possible, bringing as much food as he could get. Solo, Kieran and the others had been starving. The Elric family could spare a bit.

The blond had learned a lot from the group. He was taught one of his first codes, how to tell when someone was cheating you and how to spot a thief in a crowd. They had just moved onto basic pick-pocketing when Edward had caught the disease spreading through the streets like wildfire. He had gone home and collapsed into bed. His mother had stayed by his side night and day, sending Al to the Rockbells. Ed had eventually recovered and had gone back to practicing Alchemy with Al.

He had never tried to go back.

Edward hated to admit it, but he had been afraid. The experience had shaken him to the core. He had been very close to dying. And he wasn’t in a great hurry to repeat the experience. So he blocked the entire incident from his mind and focused on his brother.

Then the terrible day had come.

It had seemed like such a normal day. Bright and beautiful. They had come home to find their mother on the ground, breathing heavily.

The doctor said that it was an illness that Trisha Elric had for years, but Edward knew the truth in his heart. He recognized these symptoms. It was the plague. He had tried everything he could and yet nothing was good enough.

Their mother had died.

Then Edward had made the decision that would strip him of his innocence and joy for many years to come. He would fix his mistake. That’s what he had to do.

“Al, let’s revive Mom.

Notes:
When either Duo or Ed jumps across the world, they land relatively close to each other.
In the GW world, the array has to be activated by the death of someone nearby. In L2, this would be a rather common event, so Ed could leave at will. Neither is aware of the death price to work the arrays.
In the FMA world the arrays work like normal arrays.

omfg Love!!!! *SO* much love. Uber uber *uber* love!!!

And then wow... cause just... wow.

I adore the idea that Trisha caught the L2 plague. Hadn't ever considered that you could in theory do that with FMA, but damned if it isn't genius.

Also, MMA ~ because there are some things you've done in here that show up in Braid, esp. the idea of Duo meeting Ed during his time in the gang and then re-meeting him years later; and lest we forget, giving Duo an Irish name beginning with K. (I've been calling him Kip Kierland; you called him Kieran. omgwtf.)

... so... how much begging do I have to do if I want more?

Man, you really do like writing crossovers, don't you? ;p

Interesting story idea. Some spots seemed a little hard to follow, but that might just be me being tired and still sniggering over Yami no Matsuei from anime club tonight.

And people thinking that Heero is Roy's son.... just oh so wrong. XD

Yes, I love writing crossovers. Number one up there with AUs.

I thought some of them might be hard to follow. This was written in the hours I'm usually asleep. ^^;;;;;

THAT is Forgottenlover's doing. The rest of the story was planned a while ago, that twist came from FL's drabble (which I threw in merely to make the stories work in a flow).

That idea hit me the other day when thinking about GW (AC's fault) FMA (current obsession) when rewatching some of the episodes for ficcage material (can't remember which fic) and I was like "AH! NO! THE CROSSOVER IS BACK!" Then Aru wrote your request and I went "what the hell. let's get this out of the way."

Personally, I think the two of them meeting during childhood is kinda predictable. I wanted to be careful with how much Ed would have been exposed to the gang though. He dosen't have Duo's skills in FMA, so I wanted Ed to have minimal contact. Enough to make a connection, but not enough to completely foil the FMA childhood story line (please note that Al used to complain about Ed running off all the time).

The name thing is amusing. I went to a site and started looking through Celtic names. I went with that one because it means little dark one and looks really good. I wanted to contrast Helio (greek god of the sun)with darkness. But I am not surprised we both started with K. Twinness and all that.

Um....the bunnies are kinda dead. I could do the next scene I suppose. FL's trying to get other people to continue this too.
