There's a tendency for certain clans, which is why Euphie and Cornelia share an element. Lelouch and Nunnally are actually both half human (Marianne was mostly human with some dark court fae in her background she didn't know about that's why Charles was so attracted to her) and it's the human element that makes it unpredictable. The result of mixed pairs is also a bit more questionable, but you won't get say, an air out of a water-earth mix. You'll get water or earth.
How the element surfaces in an individual strongly has to due with personality. Lelouch is the epitome of 'still waters run deep.'
