Calling All Heroes
There were times when the loneliness became too strong, too much for him to bear, where not even the presence of his friends could diminish it. On those days Cloud left the others behind and traveled to the places of power, seeking solace. There, in the Forgotten City, The Ancient’s Temple, The Crater….. there he could rest, slipping from this world to the barrier which laid between the mortal realm and the land of the dead, the Lifestream. And they were there.
She always came first, a warm presence that comforted and healed. More often than not he awoke to the feeling of her hands on his forehead, an anchor to this place.
He came next, that bright presence that was so warm it was almost painful and so bright it was almost impossible to try and look at him. His presence was like a whirlwind, dragging you away from whatever you tried to control and throwing you into a world of merry chaos. Appropriate, considering what he had gotten away with in life.
He always came last; his presence was cold and chilling, but hesitant as well, afraid he would be rejected for past acts. Cloud found his presence comforting though; it was a strong contrast to the whirlwind that attempted to scatter his worries and fears. He was solid, an anchor even more than she was. Not surprising. Hadn’t Cloud based his life around him for so long?
Cloud could never stay long. They had a few minutes, no more than a quarter of an hour at anytime. Still, it was usually enough to keep Cloud going just a bit more, just a bit longer so he could finish his duties. And it was comforting to know they were with him always in quiet a literal sense, though usually he didn’t use them often, and never where they could be seen by any other than soon to be demolished foes.
It was very nice to have Sephiroth’s attacks on his side for once.
Then, years later when all of his friends had vanished from the mortal world – even Vincent, who had fallen prey to the voices in his mind at last and had begged for Cloud to end his life – Cloud stepped one last time into the barrier and didn’t come back.
It was Yuffie’s many times great-grandson who discovered the warrior’s disappearance, though in the end the only clue they found were four small, glowing red stones.
Quite some time later:
“All I have to do is think about what that pilot- ”
“Cid, Zack.”
“Cid would think of this scene and I can’t help but be amused.” Zack grinned, leaning back against a nonexistent wall and surveying the scene in front of him.
Cloud exchanged an exasperated look with his opponent. “Would you rather we fought again? Check.”
“Of course not. Then again, there isn’t much in the way of property to damage around here…Might be a nice change.”
“Be quiet, Zack.” Sephiroth frowned and moved his king out of danger. “You’re getting better.” Cloud flushed ever so slightly at the complement.
“I still don’t see what you two like about that game, much less why you got a duplicate of it. It’s from another dimension!” Zack sighed.
“PLANET’S CHAMPION!”
“Be right back.” Cloud vanished.
“Really Seph. What do you and Spike like about that game anyway? I can’t see why the Earthers like it so much.” Zack studied the chessboard again.
“It’s a strategy game, Zackary.”
“I would have thought you had enough of that when you were a general,” Zack sighed. He looked at his friend imploringly. “Let’s do something fun!”
A brief shimmer and Aeris appeared besides the pair. “Have any ideas?”
“Don’t give him an opportunity, Miss Gainsborough. You’ll regret it.”
“Aeris, Sephiroth. We’ve known each other long enough.” She sat down, studying Zack. “So what did you have in mind?”
“Well, I – ”
“BRIGHT PROTECTOR!”
Zack blinked out, just as Cloud returned. “I think you’ll be going out again soon, Aeris. They’re having a hard time.”
“Oh dear.”
“HEALING GOSPEL!”
Sure enough, Aeris vanished.
“HEAVEN’S TERROR!”
Cloud found himself alone as Sephiroth vanished as well. It only lasted a moment, however, before Zack reappeared. “I think they’re nearly done.”
“Good,” Cloud replied. A second later, Aeris materialized quickly followed by Sephiroth. “Status?”
“Dead.” Sephiroth smirked.
“Which means we won’t be called out every few minutes,” Zack replied, eyes glinting with mischief. “Cloud, I know you liked Yuffie well enough but was it really necessary to let her descendants find our summon orbs? It’s amazing we get any time alone!”
And no, I don’t know if Seph meant the enemies or the summoners were dead…
