FMA: In Silence

zalia's Birthday present! She asked for fluffy Roy/Ed. I'm not sure this quite fits the bill but...

This has to be one of the most cliché ideas ever. However, as it is September I am quite safe. ^.^ Besides, I had fun writing it.

In Silence -

[The scene is a familiar one. An officer sits at his desk, papers before him. To his left stands his blonde aid, lecturing the man on the importance of getting his work done. To those extremely observant, the barest touch of a smile marks her face as she continues her sermon. They both recognize he knows how to get his work done; it is just that the work he usually does is not that which is usually assigned.

Indeed, usually it is of greater importance to his overall goals.

The rest of the officer’s subordinates sit around a series of desks in the middle of the room, diligently working on their own papers, well aware of the consequences of drawling the blonde’s attention to them.

The phone rings. The raven haired officer grimaces for a moment then picks up the phone. The barest look of joy passes over his features as he hears the voice on the end.]

“Fullmetal.”

“Colonel.”

[On the other side of the line, a young teenager stands in a public phone booth, the machine clutched in his metal hand. Behind him stands his brother, a strange sight in his metal amour. The boys’ heads were closer together than normal, as the elder brother was perched on top of a box in order to reach the phone.

That had had caused quite a scene.]

“I was beginning to think you got lost under a rock out there. You waited a long time to call in.”

I was worried

“WHO’S SO SHORT HE CAN’T BE SEEN FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF A PEBBLE?”

I’m FINE, alright?

“I don’t recall saying that, Edward….”

I’m glad.

“Hmph.”

“So did you accomplish anything other than rack up your expense bill again? Finance is going to have your head for the amount of destruction you caused.”

Did you find it?

“No. And that was completely justified!”

“Convince the finance board of that. They are, by the way, anxiously awaiting your return so they can begin tallying up your latest bill. You DO realize there is a limit of funds for damage control, yes?”

Are you coming home soon?

“Bastard. And yes I do. We should be back in a few days.”

I’ll be home soon as long as no other leads show up.

“Ah yes. Do try not to be distracted by every little shiny object on your way home, Fullmetal. They have a habit of blowing up in your face.

Be careful.

“Whose so childish he doesn’t know when not to touch something? YOU should be more careful, I hear there are sharks among those women of yours.”

Watch your back too. You’re in more danger than we are.

“I’ll expect your report in my office by next week, Fullmetal.

And you at home.

“Yeah, yeah, you’ll have it.”

I’ll be there

[The phone in the blond’s hand slams down violently. The youth leaves, complaining loudly to his brother about how unfair his commanding officer is. The officer in question lowers his own phone with a smirk, making a general comment about the folly of youth and impatience.

No one sees relief hidden in their eyes.]
