Kazaera: Although they used the definition of "less than a hundred words". I've seen at least four different definitions for that being bandied around.
Bard Linn: XD;;
Bard Linn: I more or less call something a drabble if it doesn't really DO anything. Short character reflections, pointless interaction, humor...no plot.
Kazaera: I prefer "EXACTLY 100 words" myself, cause that's how I learned it and it's more of a challenge that way. But I suppose it depends on the community.
Bard Linn: *will not be confined by 100 words!*
Kazaera: I get that, but I like it as a writing exercise when I can't think of anything.
Bard Linn: *nod nod* Oh, 100 words is definitely a good exercise.
Kazaera: And sometimes I just get little snippets that won't turn into a real fic and I think "this could be a drabble"
Kazaera: Exactly!
Bard Linn: But something are drabble like - they don't work well as real fic - but are longer to be complete
Kazaera: *nods* Yep, I know what you mean. But to me those are... reflections, or snippets, or something - not drabbles. XD
Kazaera: Although I will accept exactly 200 words as double-drabble.
Kazaera: (I suppose 300 would be a triple-drabble then...)
Bard Linn: (400 quadruple drabble...)
Kazaera: (sextuple drabble?)
Kazaera: XD
Bard Linn: XDDDDDDDDD

Hey, I wrote a sextuple drabble once--though I called it a hexadrabble. Different fandom though. Just came out 600 words on the nose.

I was vaguely thinking for a while of having a contest for people to write dodecadrabbles--1,200 words--simply because I was in love with the word construct. I mean, dodecadrabble! XD

I learnt about drabbles from a group a HP writers who ran a regular Drabble Night - though they had a thing of picking a topic, giving a time limit, and they had to write within a length that was a multiple of 5.
Between them and [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse (who had 150-250 word guideline for weekly challenges) it was a long time before I found out some people have very strict ideas of what a "drabble" is.

Personally I accept the word "drabble" for anything short - say under 1000 words. Larger stuff more fits the labels of "shortfic", "short story" and plain old "fic" - though if you get much larger (like over 10,000 words) anything with "short" in it will be a misnomer.

I can see what you mean. For me its more about content, but each to their own, hey?

Some people would disagree with that *cough*drabblepolice*cough*
