Title: Numbers
Archive: Doubles (Small Revelations)
Summary: Things weren't adding up.
Chronology Aru's been around for a little over a month. Other than that, no idea.
Warnings (if any): Math alert!

Numbers

Riza had long ago resigned herself to handling the house paperwork. Edward was out of town a good portion of the time and didn’t have a head for finances anyway; Masuta and Al weren’t particularly adept at it and Roy…the less said about Roy and paperwork the better.

The officer had a particular method for doing the bills and the like. She had multiple books detailing the expenses of the house accurately and neatly, making it easy to keep track of all the variables.

So when Riza sat down on her usual day to do the bills and came up with a larger than usual monthly spending amount, she was rather surprised. The blonde frowned, going over the numbers again. They hadn’t made any major purchases that she could see, but there was definitely a difference from last month. A sizable amount. Riza pulled out last months numbers and laid them side by side with her newly completed ones. The frown grew as she noted increased spending in the grocery bills. They had been using more water too. In fact, most of the individual categories had swelled. She snapped the books shut. Really, managing money matters on three salaries in a house of five was difficult enough without splurging…

Riza froze, retracing her thought. House of five. Aru. How had she forgotten? The other Elric had been staying with them for a little over a month now. Of course the bills had increased. It wasn’t a house of five anymore, it was a house of six.

Come to think of it, it was amazing the water usage hadn’t gone up anymore.

Her pale hands quickly reopened the books. A few quick calculations gave her a prediction for next month. She tapped her fingers against the desk. It would be tight; the five of them together had been interesting. They had never been exactly in a money trouble, but that was mostly due to Riza’s careful budgeting. (Some of the men didn’t understand that you couldn’t just go out and BUY whatever you wanted without there being consequences…) Adding another person to the three salaries would mean no spontaneous spending if they could help it, or they would dip into their savings. Which Riza would prefer not to do, since she would rather keep that for emergencies or for home improvements. Or trips. She would have to mention it to the others. And talk to Masuta and Al about bringing in stays. They couldn’t afford to feed so many.

Riza paused. There would probably be more cats coming in too.

Shaking her head, the officer went back to the bills. She filled out the last of the checks and carefully filled everything away. It was amazing, she pondered, how one person could make such a change in their lives. In small ways as well as in large ones.

It was all in the numbers.

particularly adapt at it and Roy…

adept

or they would slip into their savings.

would dip into (slip sounds funny)

They couldn’t afford to feed to many.

so many (or too)

In small ways and as in large ones.

as well as in

I'll likely put this in small revelations
