Butterfly Effect: Authors' Notes: Chapter 1

The Birth of Butterfly Effect, as Transcribed by [personal profile] kiraya

Once upon a time, a movie was created in the Land of the Rising Sun, known also as Japan; and the movie was called Advent Children, and it was much anticipated by Teh Intarweb.

And thus it was that Kiraya found trailers for this movie, and was much intrigued, for the voices were rich and the characters most comely; and at the end of September, when Advent Children rode forth in all its glory on the creature known as Bittorrent, she did download it posthaste, and saw that it was good.

And so it came to pass that yet another FF7 fan was born, and she did venture forth into Teh Intarweb, discovering many and plentiful works of yaoi, and was much pleased at finally understanding That Sephiroth-And-Cloud Thing That's All Over The Damn Place; that, however, is a different story.

In those days Kiraya was studying the language of Japan with another who was an FF7 fan, called Linn; so it was that Linn discovered Kiraya's new love, and verily did she encourage it, bestowing upon her friend the Game Itself, and offering wondrous recommendations to shining examples of fiction written in its honour.

Long did they speak on the fandom and its manifold works, for a Cloud Fangirl and a Zack Fangirl have, by canon, much to discuss; and so it came to pass one day in early October that Linn mentioned her desire to spin a tale in which a young Cloud, his innocence unsullied by the machinations of mad Hojo, happened upon the dark and brooding Vincent in the catacombs of the Shinra Mansion.

And Kiraya was much intrigued by this, for it presented untold possibilities. "Lo," quoth she, "canst thou even begin to imagine how deeply affected the plot would be by such a thing?"

"Verily would the entirety of the story be changèd," quoth Linn, deep in thought.

And so they undertook the great art known as Plotting, drawing up timelines and explanations and Where Was He And What Was He Doing There At That Time; and Linn, Lady Of The AU and Driver Of The Plot, kept the endeavour on its course with her steady hand; and Kiraya, Grammar Nazi Extraordinaire and Total Nut For Stupid Little Details (Do We REALLY Need To Know Who's A Lefty And Who's Not?), enriched the tapestry with fine minutiae.

And lo, it came to pass that at the end of that very month, after writing twenty pages of emoticon- and 1337-filled outlines in which the epic tale was delineated from start to finish, Butterfly Effect was born; and they saw that they had created a monster it was good.

[Linn had nothing to do with the creation of the above paragraphs, but finds them very amusing.]

Bard Linn: The first chapter of BE was a bit interesting to write. We were working out detail of exactly how we were going to do this. LJ turned out to be excellent for cowriting as comments allowed us each to create a small bit of the chapter at a time.

Kiraya: It's like playing ping-pong. Except I'm slightly better at it.

Bard Linn: And that I have to beat on her sometimes to get her to actually write.

Kiraya: ...yeah, well, who was the one who took the initiative on 7?

Bard Linn: Shhh! We're talking about 1, not 7!

Kiraya: Righto.

Bard Linn: And who wrote almost all of 6 anyway?

Kiraya: Touché.

Bard Linn: Ahem. Anyway, one of the major problems with chapter 1, and the one that caused the chapter to lag so long in getting completed, can be summed up in two words.

Kiraya: EMO TURK.

Bard Linn: Yes, Vincent was being a pain.

Kiraya: He wasn't very cooperative at all, showing little to no interest in what we needed him to do.

Bard Linn: But, with - actually, how did we get him to cooperate? I forget.

Kiraya: ...we hurt Cloud. >..>

Bard Linn: Oh, that's right!

.....

Kiraya: It wasn't very nice of us, you know.

Bard Linn: Well, hopefully it won't become a reoccurring theme. *cough*

Kiraya: Ahem. Yes.

Bard Linn: We should probably also mention here that we realize some of our geography/spacing/what-have-you in this fic will be off. We've got rooms that don't exist in game, people who don't exist in game and such. Combination of necessary for the plot and common sense.

Kiraya: *nod, nod* Ahh, the magic of AU.

Bard Linn: If you get confused, give us a shout and we'll help you out. Other stuff in this chapter... Curious!Cloud just kind of snuck up on us. We didn't intend him to be that way. But I love him so. He's cute. :)

Kiraya: I miss him... ;-;

Bard Linn: Teen!Cloud is fun too now. And there's always the possibility of side stories.

Kiraya: Indeed. I know I'll have fun with that, if I ever motivate my lazy butt.

Bard Linn: I think that pretty much wraps it up for this chapter. Alas, there were no outtakes for Chapter 1, but there will be in the future. Until then, this pretty much wraps of the notes for this chapter. We hope you enjoyed the chapter!
