End of the Love is in the Air festival fic, continued from part 1 and part 2.

Twenty-eight bracelets. By the end of the week there were twenty-eight of the things, all laid neatly in a carven wood box with velvet lining that had taken up residence in a drawer in Anduin's office. His mates were, no doubt, looking forward to seeing their last efforts on him that evenings; Ren had remarked that it was a good look, and he hoped Anduin might occasionally continue wearing them after the festival.

It was the last evening of the festival, the flower and sweet sellers finally closing up shop and taking stock of their sales. The festival merchants were taking down the temporary stalls set up in the market squares. And the King of Stormwind had, through much arranging, several hours of free time without interruption, a spool of gold jewelry wire, and a set of the small tools that the festival merchants had been happily selling all week.

I should start titling these. And I was going to finish up the charm bracelet prank, but Brewfest started last night, and the headcanon for Brewfest just sort of unfolded along the way, so here's the start of THAT, and I'll get back to the charm bracelet and the wedding and all that soon. It's all Pandaren and Anduin all the time anyways, I'm just scene jumping! =P

Oria is another original character, btw - part of the Wildhammer clan, she was the first foreign ambassador Anduin appointed to his council and paved the way for including one ambassador from each of the Alliance races to balance out the otherwise overwhelmingly human-centric House of Nobles. Oria has it in her contract with Anduin that she is exempt from all council meetings during the two-week duration of Brewfest. For "traditional cultural festivities" (and the attendant hangovers).

The dwarf caught at Anduin's sleeve, his brows drawn down in a dark frown. "Not so fast, lad," he huffed. "It ain't just th' wee ones that need t' prove they can sit a saddle before they go takin' my rams anywhere."

Something flickered across Anduin's face, there and gone again so fast it was easy to miss, before smoothing into the polite facade that was most often presented to the House of Nobles. "Of course," he agreed.

At Ren's elbow, Oria made a pained noise. "Oh no," she groaned, shoving her tankard aside and making to rise to her feet. "He must not recognize..."

"Leave it," Ren advised, pressing a hand to her shoulder to push her back into her seat. "Anduin will handle it."

(continued from yesterday)

It was late into the audience hours when the royal Consort and his cousin unexpectedly turned up in line.

Anduin almost had to look twice when their names - sans title or any other fanfaire - were called, the surprise making him slow. They were both of them in travel clothes, leathers worn smooth and supple, ragged and stained, the sort of clothes for hunting, fishing, and sleeping out on the road. They had obviously been out somewhere; Elwynn forest, Anduin suspected, part of Hardwire's ongoing campaign to train Ren back into some semblance of fitness after the birth of the babes. There was dirt and what looked like fresh blood stains on their clothes, and there would probably be venison or roast boar on the dinner table.

Dirty and disheveled, and Ren, at least, was visibly tired, and both with small gift boxes in hand and the most shit-eating grins Anduin had ever seen. He didn't, in that moment, know whether to kiss them or box their ears.

No writing yesterday - was home being sickly. =P That'll teach me not to overdo the unpacking while dehydrated. And now, just to prove how many fic bits I can juggle all at once, here, have a bit about the first Love is in the Air valentine's holiday after the launch of the Legion expansion.... (because my muses are random bastards who jump around and this was what Anduin felt like giving me this morning =P)

-----

"Good morning, your Majesty," was the first warning he had, a little too bright and cheerful, the throne room guards all smiling a little too broadly. Anduin shook his head ruefully.

"Already?"

The senior guard grinned, utterly unrepentant. "It's not so bad, sir.... yet."

"Yet," Anduin echoed dubiously. His willingness to play along with the game made their smiles broader still, both guards moving to sweep back the doors to the throne with more enthusiasm than strictly necessary.

The audience line had already formed, which didn't make it that different from most days except for the composition of the line - even at a glance Anduin could count more mercenaries than tradesmen, when usually it was the reverse. It was the throne itself that was the source of the guards' amusement; or rather, the two small wrapped boxes resting there, given place of pride on the cushion.

Anduin plucked them from the throne. The gift boxes fit in his palm, heavier than they looked, with a metallic sort of jingle to them. "Only two?" he noted, jesting.

Cut for image )

Doll-finzzzz~! I'm giving the image hosting site Imgur a try at a friend's recommendation, after ranting hardcore at them about Photobucket being a butt. (Dreamwidth, I love you, and I am 100% going to store more images here and love it, especially for accessibility, but you currently don't have the image organization tools that I require. I have well over five hundred pictures of crocheted things alone, and don't care to try and sort through all of them every time I want to get to a Dreamsheep icon, for example.)

Anyway, these are all of the dolphins I've made so far for ICON, the local SFF con, one of whose staff members commissioned me to make a little somethin' for the Con Benefactor bags. They only need seventeen, but I'm like, why stop there? So I'm currently up to twenty-six, and there's still another week-and-a-half before the con for me to make more.

Lots of colors were specifically requested, or I probably (definitely) would've gone with all pale blue/periwinkle/gray/vaguely-real-dolphin-color-ish. (The color of the four light-blue-ish dolphins in the top of the picture is listed as "lavender" on the yarn. I mean, it looks a lot more blue-ish to me, but there's something like a 25-50% chance I'm a carrier for red/green colorblindness, so.) I think I'm kinda glad for that request, because it's actually made using the same pattern over and over again less boring :P I love how naturally the yarn tends to stripe, too.

I've finally found it: The perfect pun to use for romantic orientations in my Potions collection!

Roman-tonic :D

I gave serious thought to just adding "oil" to the end of romantic orientations, but it just didn't sit right with me. I'm definitely glad I gave myself the time to find something else.

Now I just gotta find something good and punny for gender identities. Gender Fluid and Genderflux Capacitor only cover two identities, and there's a lot more out there to think about.

(back to the wedding bits for today!)

The King's study was, in theory, a place of quiet work and relaxation, where the King could retire from the company of councilors and ministers to review the day's issues and draft necessary written orders. Anduin knew his father had only ever used it as such while nursing a hangover and needing a darkened room and some semblance of work in order to stave off those clamoring for his time; being trapped at a desk with paperwork was, quite likely, one of Varian Wrynn's conceptions of hell.

As a note of interest, the pic of Anduin in my new icon is from the pre-expansion comic that Blizzard released... sadly, there aren't actually that many good face shots of him in it, but the interesting part that I only realized when I opened it up to find a screencap this morning is that he's holding the demon assassin at sword point and the sword is Shalamayne - which he only recovered from the Broken Shore in patch 7.2, during the Alliance quest chain with him. So actually, that comic would take place sometime after 7.2, and not right after the expansion launch the way I initially read it.

Dragging in a ragged breath from somewhere, Ren slid the straps of the carrier off his shoulders, pulling it and both boys around to where he could wrap his arms around them against his front. "/Ling, Den, this is your uncle, Hardwire./" He took another breath, the taste dry and sour in his mouth, and dared to look up and meet his cousin's eyes. "/They're mine./"

Whatever the too-fast beat of his heart was trying to brace for - anger, rejection, condemnation - not even the shadow of it appeared. Hardwire's ears spread wide in astonishment, but his cousin leaned in with a low, soothing rumble to scent both boys, inhaling over their small ears. When Den, in an uncharacteristic fit of bravery, reached up to tug at the thick fur of his cousin's beard, Hardwire only chuckled and lifted the cub easily out of the carrier, boosting the boy up to his shoulder where Den clung, wide eyed, to Hardwire's topknot.

"Hear that?" he announced to the room at large, which of course they had but without any understanding of the Pandaren words. "I'm an uncle!"

The guard was laughing softly, the sound not unkind. "Never seen a human before? Well, fair enough, I've never seen one of your race travel with them so young. Cute little balls of trouble, aren't they? Reminds me of my own when they were that small." He handed Ren back his papers, with a visitor's week pass bundled with it. "If you need longer, just come back to have it renewed."

"Thank you," Ren said stiffly. The furless races were notoriously bad at reading body language in those with fur but habit and the gritted force of his grinding teeth kept Ren from displaying more than a backwards twitch of his ears, despite how the word 'trouble' had made his stomach drop. The man's tone was kindly, though, and he spared another smile and wave to Ren's cubs, a gesture that was echoed by the other guard, and then Ren whistled to their turtle and they were through the gate and into the city proper.

Just a short bit today! This is set much much earlier than the wedding bits I've been writing - back when Varia was 3, the twins were 2, and the quadruplets weren't in existence yet, and despite 3 cubs between them Anduin and Ren were not currently A Thing, and everything was Very Awkward.

The Dwarven district was mercifully quieter than the human filled Trade area of the city, the primary sounds being the clang of metal and wheeze of bellows from the forges. It was also very near the Pandaren enclave, pressed right to the rear gates of the great Stormwind walls, and the bored guards stationed there barely gave Ren a second glance.

His original identification papers from the Alliance, years old, gave them more of a pause, the senior guard raising a brow and looking Ren over with a curious eye that lingered on his Pandaren robes and the baskets of gear fastened to the saddle of his turtle. "Trader?" he guessed. "This district's market is in two days. You'll be wanting to talk to Mistresse Edelai, she can get you a booth, and the Pandaren can stable your beast out at the lake."

Ren opened his mouth to reply, the Common words coming slow and awkward to his tongue after too long dormant, but the larger basket strapped to the front of the saddle answered for him when his eldest, tiring of observing quietly with wide eyes from between the woven reed, scrambled out. Ren caught him on reflex, plucking the cub up onto his lap before Ling could spill himself right over the edge of the carrier. "/Da,/" the cub cried, bouncing on Ren's knee in excitement, and Ancestor's have mercy, he was down to nothing but fur and a diaper cloth again, his robe crumpled in the bottom of the carrier where the cub had squirmed out of it. "/Da, here? Humans?/"

Things I need to do: The Crossover/Fusion exchange fic, which is off to a rocky start because I mixed up whether the requester had asked for Avatar or Korra. I had a great bunny for Korra, but the requester wants Aang's gang, so now I need to rework. Fortunately it's a 1k minimum exchange, and honestly, I just need to pick a scene and write it because I'm contractually incapable of writing a scene in less than 1.5k. =P (due - Oct 2)

Things I am going to attempt to do: Inktober and Nanowrimo. Do I have any idea what I'm doing for either? NOPE. But I'm not going to let that stop me. My Patreons can expect to be deluged with random inked drawings in October, which hopefully might make up for my radio silence during the whole moving house mess.

The silk master stepped back, clapping her hands in delight like a girl half her age, her smile brilliant. "Yes," she said, pleased. "Yes, that will do."

Which was his cue. Ren turned - slowly, the shuffle of his feet careful and mindful of the length of his robes - to face the tri-fold mirror that took up most of the far wall.

The Pandaren in the reflection... wasn't him.

In RL news, we unpacked the kitchen this weekend. YAY! There are real dishes and silverware (barring the soup bowls which I know are in a plastic tub with blankets, but I'm not sure where the tub is) to eat off of, and real pans to cook with, and I made massaman curry in the crock pot last night. Then we charged up the lawnmower, figured out how to assemble it, and tried mowing the grass.

.....AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, no. =____= The poor lawn mower managed roughly 5 sweeps of the smaller side of the yard before it gave up, battery out of charge, and the grass still ankle deep in places (down from the knee deep it started at). =P I've got a call out with a local handyman/yard guy to see what he'd charge for just taming the whole yard down to a level where I can actually maintain it with a normal size lawnmower, because our grass is reaching ridiculous levels.

Then we misplaced one cat for a few hours which gave us fits and heart attacks hoping she hadn't gotten outside while the mowing was going on. Nope - snuck downstairs into the storage room, little brat, and was hiding out on the yarn shelves tucked into piles of yarn. *facepalm*

Now that the kitchen is unpacked, my next task should be attacking the clothing situation, get everything hung up and put away so the cats stop burrowing into all my laundry. Then I will see if I can round up enough spoons by this weekend to start sorting book shelves and books.

Because I'd like to post more, and things don't have to be polished and finished, and I just need to get back into the habit of not self-censoring like that. So here! Have a bit of a scene, set far forward in my OC WoW verse where Anduin is totally shacked up with two Pandaren. And then someone pointed out the King really needed to make things official...

Pre-Wedding

"I'm not allowed to kill that pompous, senile, yak shit for brains waste of breath, am I?" Ren growled, kicking the door to the royal apartments closed behind him.

"No," Anduin responded immediately from where he was sitting on the deep window seat in the last dregs of the afternoon sun. Varia, who was sitting on a foot stool in front of her father while Anduin fixed her braid, chimed in with an echoed "no" and Ren bit his tongue and groaned.Read more... )

I already knew from an earlier hike that the blue trail in Silas Condict Park doesn't provide that special of a view, unless maybe it's sunset or autumn or both. I apparently didn't remember (because as soon as I got there, I felt like I'd been there before) that the red trail's point of interest is nothing but a big ol' rock without even a view.

And the white trail was closed off with fences and a big "NO TRESPASSING" sign. The signs out front of the park had warned about construction and certain things being closed, but they never mentioned any effect to the hiking trails.

As for Mountainside Park, yes, you get a view clear to Manhattan from the summit. But there's nothing interesting in the foreground, which doesn't make for a very good photograph. Also, the hike is rather long. In the future, the best bet is probably to stick to the yellow trail the whole way, or else blue to orange to yellow (the blue trail's final approach to the summit is just ridiculous, as I learned by going back down via it).
